Last Day of the Workshop

We had an early appointment to tour the Parliament Palace.  This is the largest and heaviest administrative building in the world.  It's rumored that if all the chandeliers are turned on at the same time, the would be a blackout in Bucharest.  The only larger administrative building in the world is the Pentagon.

Built by Nicolae Ceausescu to prove to the world how wealthy Romania was, it ultimately helped to lead to his downfall and execution.  We toured several rooms that serve as performance venues, meeting rooms and event halls.  It is really quite an amazing place.  The street in front of it was redesigned to be slightly longer than the Champs Elysee.  A balcony overlooking the street was the scene of many public addresses by the dictator.  It cost somewhere around $5 billion to build.  Such features as a 5 ton chandelier, marble pillars and walls, and gold leaf decor helped to boost the cost.

We had a little time after our tour to have lunch and pick our final photos for our last critique.  By this point, we all had assembled a body of work from our week in Romania.  Ari spent time after class to create a slideshow of our work for our final gathering.

After our final class, we headed off in Ubers to dinner at Sky Tower.  This modern building is the home to a penthouse restaurant with views of the city.  A family style meal left us full and ready for bed.  A bittersweet meal, we said goodbyes to our friends and promised to meet in future workshops in 2020 and beyond.  This group has a very tight bond.

We stayed on in Bucharest for several more days.  The next night, a group of 8 of us dined at Il Destino, an Italian restaurant which I highly recommend.  We wondered the city for the next couple of days, visiting parks and churches and taking in more food and wine.

It's been a wonderful trip with a great group of people.

Until next time....

Tammie
